How to apply Arctic Silver 5 on your CPU


Remember all the steps you had to take to apply Arctic Silver 3? Things have changed. The process is much simpler now.

Who will find this useful? Anyone that needs help applying Arctic Silver 5 on your CPU or if you are just looking for pictures to make sure you applied the correct amount of thermal compound.

You don’t have to spread the thermal compound across the top of the CPU anymore. Also, you don’t have to put anything on the heat-sink prior to mounting.

You should only apply a small amount to the center of the CPU (not the heat-sink) before mounting the heat-sink to the motherboard. The pressure of the heat-sink will spread the compound for you.

For a P4, you should only need to use the amount equivalent to about one (1) uncooked short-grains of white rice.
For bigger processors, for instance an AMD64, Intel Core 2 Duo or Xeon you should only need to use the amount equivalent to about one and one half (1-1/2) uncooked short-grains of white rice. Here is a closer screen-shot of the processor (Intel Xeon Socket 604 Processor):

  2. the stock cpu has default thermal strips already. do i have to remove that before i install the fan/heatsink on top of the cpu with the arctic silver 5?

  4. Hi, do you have article on how to apply AS5 on a laptop cpu? I’m still confused how much AS5 will I put on the CPU. Pictures while applying would be a lot helpful.
